“That is the beauty of freelancing”, she said, “dig a well everyday to drink water. There is no piped water delivered to your faucets like a salary.”

“Well, I’ve never dug a well in my life but I come from a village, where we used a handpump to get water, and I can bet it’s not exciting in the least.”

He spoke at length of communities formed to share water-pumping duties, finding alternate sources of water, approaching authorities in organised groups and how they managed to get proper irrigation channels for the village.

“So Dad, if I hear you right”, she said with a sigh, “you are asking me to develop networks, package my products well and find channels that provide work consistently.”

“Brilliant”, his face beamed up despite the fact that he had not received his paycheck this month, and he did not want to tell his daughter about it.

    1. We reach unforeseen places, and it gives rise to a different thought process. For me, the father’s advice sounds like regret – things he wished he should have done, but did not.
