Blinding sun

I emerged from a cave and discovered sunlight today.

Was I born in that place, or made to believe so? Did I really think there’s no life outside, or was I happy in victimhood? Life’s easy when you can blame everything on others, not once thinking what you would do if you were free … and happy.

Happiness is scary, because you’re responsible for yourself. I chose to remain content in darkness, and believe you are the sun. To be pretty for you I have dropped two seeds of turnsole in the dark of both eyes. It did not work, because turnsoles need the sun. And eyes that refuse to dream are not fertile ground for anything to grow.

I’m out now and compelled to grow. There’s no one left to blame, for I had to eliminate you to see myself in the mirror.

  1. So much wisdom in this message, which I wish many young people could read……….I especially love the seeds not working because turnsoles – and women – need the sun. So well done!

  2. Like many others, I also loved this line, Reena:

“And eyes that refuse to dream are not fertile ground for anything to grow”

Enjoyed the awakening you describe in your write and how you used the quote to express the analogy of another way of seeing the truth.

  3. That’s a very intriguing opening line, Reena, which hooked me immediately. I wanted to know how your character came to be in a dark cave. I especially like the thought that ‘happiness is scary, because you’re responsible for yourself’ and ‘it did not work, because turnsoles need the sun. And eyes that refuse to dream are not fertile ground for anything to grow’.
