I call her my sulking toy
heartbreakingly cute she is
angry for no reason at times
sitting under the table
hiding behind curtains
she cuts off communication
-maybe it’s disappointment
we fail to meet her expectation
disciplined and prompt
she starts walking
in reflex action when called
-Then she stops
turns back to see if
her sibling darling
walks in tandem
-she takes another moment
To decide
what she wants to do
walk ahead
wait for him
or just bark
to express displeasure
at his slothful ways
We call it
Shenanigans…
But then I stop to think
what if I had long, sultry days ahead
lonely nights when others sleep
Not much to do…
Would I not be angry with the world?
for not keeping me engaged
failing to excite or incite
somehow make everything right
I buy a few more toys
watch her discarding those
in a few minutes
retreating behind the curtains
I know I need to act
to perform, to react
to keep her entertained
I mimic her bark
watch her surprised reaction
at my shenanigans
I watch her wagging tail
feel her licks on my face
and we love each other
unconditionally
once again
in unison..

Your dog is adorable ma’am. 😍 I really love how you described her tantrums!

A great poem for you cute little dog! I do wonder if they get bored staying in the house most of the time.

I’m sure they do, but the vet told us not to leash them as yet. So the balcony is their exposure to the sky, or a visit to the vet or groomer in a basket.

I think she was right to sulk… dogs need attention.

Especially shih-tzus need a lot of attention. They don’t like being alone.

As I got to the end of your poem, I felt like the pup was an aspect of the human, and it gave me a good feeling to think the human would feel empathy and be kind to the darker aspects of herself. Beautiful spin on the prompt, Reena.
That puppy is adorable!

They are more settled than us. We’ve become tenants and facilitators 😀
