Common Sense

We may assume that common sense is acting to achieve a goal, keeping the larger good in mind. The law, religion and etiquette all teach us not to ride roughshod over others in our own interest.

Most of us are shocked when we see this basic principle being flouted. Over a period of time, we turn numb. We’ve seen so much of it that we start redefining norms. This becomes ‘our experience’.

Similarly, all the perpetrators of evil and the victims create their own experience based on victory or defeat.

The code is re-written. Those who follow the old rules are labelled stupid or behind times.

“Who leaves the house unlocked in the middle of the night? It is an invitation to thieves and dacoits.”

Now each of us has a different code of conduct – to protect our own interest.

‘Common’ sense becomes uncommon, because we do not have anything in common. The larger good is only a text book concept.

Politicians work at expanding rifts.

Businessmen find insecurities to be filled by their goods or services.

Leaders work at the behest of someone else to fulfil an organizational goal, not to help their teams evolve.

Everybody has got something to sell. They look for opportunities to en-cash.

Common sense wanders alone, carrying threads which used to be a fabric.

  2. I really enjoyed your post Reena, although I had to look up the word dacoits, but I think they only exist in India. I wish that more people used their common sense, but sadly most people just think about their own interests.

    1. The word dacoits comes from the Hindi word Daku or Dakait. I’m not sure if the original species still exists in forests.

      All it means is people who rob at gunpoint, as against housebreaking in the owner’s absence. I guess the modern variety does exist in urban areas everywhere 😂
