I distinctly remember the midnight mass I attended with Aunt Josephine, and the purple frock with golden checks stitched by my mom for Christmas. I was all of five years old.
Eid was spent with Uncle Latif and Aunt Mariam. The childless couple doted on me, and cooked vegetarian food for us, respecting my family’s choice.
Back then, it was not an issue – what we ate, how we celebrated, whether we worshiped or just enjoyed a party.
Togetherness was important. The bonding we shared mattered more than anything else.
Halcyon days of yore… what remains consistent is the core.

I have the same feelings about sharing Seder meal at passover with my Jewish friends. It didn’t matter that I wasn’t Jewish, what did matter was that we were “family” , even if it was just by “adoption”. What wonderful memories of sharing those holidays together.

Bear, I always call that family by bond, otherwise, it would be by blood.
