I’ve been a loner all my life. I do step out at times, but feel totally lost in a sea of people who look as human as me, but carry totally different mindsets.
I wonder if the helix of their DNA got twisted a wee bit more than mine, or their neural pathways..
I’m happy to step back in my castle – “Isle of Thoughts” says the sign board outside.
It’s just strange that I step into a different island every time. Something in the map has changed irreversibly, and it does not feel like my territory – mind maps are weird.

Interesting piece, Reena. Personally I think mindmaps are yet another distraction from simply getting on with experiencing life without thinking about it too much, like a true loner. In this context, I thought you might appreciate this little poem I wrote many years ago.
A friend in another place
Other people always seem on course,
Full Ahead to somewhere on the Sea of Life.
I am forever losing the compass
and forgetting how to drop anchor,
permanently adrift in an Other Place.
Occasionally I see harbour lights beckon
but their beams wax and wane in the fog of novelty.
Besides,
I’ve decided,
they’re probably home to the Pirates,
the Pirates of Love.
I am better off out here alone,
amidst the rocks and icebergs and whirlpools.
But I still need essential supplies
and I have nothing to trade,
except for some shells which,
when placed against the ear,
whisper cryptic messages
from an Other Place,
just in case
other people
are in an Other Place
too.

Wonderful! Thanks for sharing this, Doug!
You change the mood completely with the shell whispering cryptic messages.

Agree on the weirdness of mind maps. I’m of the belief that these (as you refer to in the Six) are as real as anything else, it’s just a matter of how much validation is demanded.
One of my favorite old, philosophical observation is “You can’t step in the same river twice.”
I never get tired of reminding myself of this… very helpful in the effort to get to the here and now*
* lol. I just read what I wrote, specifically ‘…the effort to get to the here and now’, and laughed at myself, I have so far to go in terms of true understanding

If everything is in a state of flux, where do you reach that understanding?

There is a part of all of us that is our essential self. (There’s a ton of things that we get tricked into believing is us, jobs, people’s opinion, cultural demands, but that just maya).
The world we experience is in flux (or rather the reality that we assign to the world around us and the people who make it up).
But, and this is where I was laughing at myself about my understanding of the here and now… it’s all within already. I don’t have to go anywhere to find my essential self. But, like a lot of us, mine is buried so far down, under layers, I may never get there.
Fun post this week

Mind maps can be weird but it might get kind of boring if they never changed, right? 😁
I can identify with the first part of your Six, Reena. Except the lost part. I don’t feel lost but after awhile, I can’t wait to get lost… and outta there, lol

I’m intrigued by your use of the term “mind maps”. Do you have synesthesia?
I have Spatial Sequence synesthesia and feel transported to places outside of myself. It feels as though there’s a ‘smaller reality’ that I’m orbiting when I mingle with groups. 😉

No. I don’t have synesthesia. I checked it up though. Thanks for alerting me! 🙂
