Mechanics

“These are not weeds, but garlands woven by time on your existence.”

It is my tenth day in the seniors’ home. I’m doing a survey for my thesis on speed of social change.

I gather distilled wisdom, but the context has changed. They are unable to build a relevance for themselves in new frameworks.

I propose a video series, a book to make their voice heard. Some of them look enthusiastic. Some are just sceptical.

I meet my favourite Uncle Henry on the way out,

“You know what… there is fuel in the tank, but the engine does not start.”

  1. The phrase with the garland is beautiful. And the views of young people on old ones is always the same, never changes, only when they get old themselves. Basically we are who we were at 30, only slower and sometimes sicker.

  2. I know there is a need for senior homes, but I hope I never have to live in one. To spend all your time with those of the same old age has to be depressing. We all need to have people of all ages around us to have the vitality to be healthy and happy.

  3. Reena I went to spotify and was surprised by your voice 😉 Seniors are underappreciated and slowly fade away when shoved into a nursing home and forgotten. I think the book idea can give many a sense of purpose and may lead to other pursuits for them.

  4. So beautifully expressed.
There’s fuel and the will, but can they manage to use the skill?
So true- “These are not weeds, but garlands woven by time on your existence.”
