A crack like a gunshot pierced the frozen air and the ice broke. A few more followed, and the criminals were dead. They were accused of brutal rape, and public pressure to punish them fast was mounting.
The nation celebrates. The police officers who executed the task are widely appreciated, congratulated and flowers sprinkled on them. Justice has been dispensed fast, without prolonged litigation, mercy petitions, pleas on account of their minor status etc.
A woman in a dark room is strangely silent. Her eyes are dry, but expression is tortured. She was the first to say ‘Kill him’, but is not celebrating now. She is a woman, and she is a mother … unfortunate mother of the criminal who died.
It took another gunshot – aimed at herself – to silence her sealed lips. She was guilty too… of having raised a brute. Blood flowed out from the gap under the door. The ice between her and womankind had broken.
