The HR Head was persuaded to stay back by the new management, on better terms and conditions.
“I will take my pound of flesh now”, boasted the inflated ego to his colleagues.
There was a company-wide massacre of senior employees from the old regime, and the HR Head was the weapon they used to fire. The weapon was elated about demonstrating his speed and efficiency in execution of a plan.
His own head was the last on the block, as he was framed under a false case of inappropriate conduct. There were no sympathetic colleagues left to help him find a job elsewhere.

He got his, pound for pound.

Spot on characterization. It’s a dog eat dog world as they say. Too bad his ego got in the way. He might have seen what was surely obvious to others. What goes around comes around and he got his quite quickly!

The commonality of these things almost becomes a justification for abominable acts. Human beings walk on two legs, but evolution..?
