Anachronism

The sky is clear, and the day bright.

It is a level playing field, as much as one can expect. But what hits the psyche is the emptiness of it all.

I returned here after a lapse- to the ideal place of my dreams. I wanted to be away from the VUCA world, back to serenity.

“You are way behind times, Mark! Things don’t happen that way.” My boss’s voice rings in my ears.

Am I an anachronism? What’s worse than that, do I really wish to belong anywhere? If I do, it contradicts a lot of my stated objectives.

  1. Had to look up VUCA ,which tells you just how out of touch I am. 😊. I liked the motion in your story, the contrast between volatility and stillness. I think a lot of people feel this conflict in their bones, and wonder, if rest and contemplation is even a viable option anymore. Interesting piece.

    1. There was an ancient Varna system in India – the first two stages of life were learner and householder. Then, people moved away outside civilisation, which can be compared to modern day ‘old age’ homes – but they could be writing, teaching. The last was hermitage. Now, when everybody is in the business of bread-earning, cutting off or isolation is not possible. At the same time, homogeneity is not there.

  6. A good story and well written, Reena. I don’t think I could live in the past if I wanted to. I’m now the sole owner of a flat since my husband’s death and have three employees. The third one is my lawyer as we members of this Society are going to undergo redevelopment soon. I suspect that has thrust me into an administrative role. How does one truly retire anymore? 😀 — Suzanne

  9. I often feel like an anachronism lately. Maybe it’s age and experience. I’m way out of touch with all the pop singers/actors/entertainers, and don’t really care to be IN touch 🙂 My adult children have even told me that many of my sayings are so old-fashioned that even other old people don’t know what they mean.

    It’s ok. I’m happy here 🙂

    1. Our taste, interests and value system often clashes with certain things around us. However, giving the youth their space and keeping ourselves aware of things around us is important. We need our space with like-minded people too. Those who find it are lucky.

    2. Almost like an eternal conflict. Something that keeps bothering us deep within. It’s almost like a quest to find oneself, where we feel most at home. Nice take on the prompt. Landed here through Iain Kelly’s page who does the FF posts as well. I might attempt it myself as well.
