I found myself on the psychiatrist’s couch. The person sitting opposite me spoke more like a judge than doctor.

“You suffer from eleutheromania.”

“How did you arrive at that conclusion – whatever that word means?”

“I’ve heard what your family has to say about your rebellious nature and lack of discipline?”

“But you haven’t bothered to hear me out.”

“See, this is exactly what they said – that you argue and answer back when told something.”

“Doc, are you really qualified to say whatever is it that you are saying?” I looked around the room to look for evidence of his medical qualifications or affiliations.

“Why don’t you believe what I say?”

“I like to reach my own conclusions. You may not have the requisite experience, or you may never have met someone like me. It does not mean I’m insane. Who defines sanity?”

The doctor was dumbstruck.

“Who defined the boundaries that you and my family talk about? My mind and soul are expansive, and extend beyond the realms of your limited imagination. I don’t belong here.”

I walked out with a light step. I did not hear a voice or footsteps following me. Maybe he was relieved to get rid of me. Maybe he was rethinking his boundaries. But his desire to control was suspended for a while, and I was happy.

  1. Magnificent Manifesto, Reena! I like how you ended it with “his desire to control was suspended for awhile” as those types are fixated on having a mission to cram minds into boxes (or shrink them as the old term is) and to maintain their god-like narcissistic views of themselves as the ultimate controllers. She needs to be careful that the family and the doc don’t gang up on her and have her committed. In the past it was common.

  2. I wish I was as smooth-talking and eloquently-spoken as the narrator in this piece. “My mind and soul are expansive, and extend beyond the realms of your limited imagination.” That’s my favourite line. Great piece!
