Ambition was high, thoughts were plain
needs were high, resources low
I need to get on the gravy train
I climbed the hills, come sun or rain
cut through rocks in search of dough
Ambition was high, thoughts were plain
those up there - looked at me with disdain
uncaring of blocks, I pulled on the show
I need to get on the gravy train
nothing ever was as raw as this pain
It hurt, but I did not let it grow
Ambition was high, thoughts were plain
Overall pace - I did maintain
I pushed myself, when I felt low
I need to get on the gravy train
There was bloodshed, but no stain
It cut me deep, but did not show
Ambition was high, thoughts were plain
I need to get on the gravy train
Reflection of our reality…

Maybe we need that train, but sometimes we need a bit rest as well.

What matters is the code of ethics we follow – rest is only a function of that.

The grind of that gravy train is endless and pushes us, if we allow ambition to rule us. Thanks for joining our villanelle challenge.

There’s a driving pace to this, a desperation. It’s terribly sad, actually. Thanks for joining us. A fine villanelle.
