It is the cobbler’s ancestral art. The family produced the best Kolhapuri chappals in the market – durable and economical. Jeans and kurtas with Kolhapuri chappals was the trending attire for students and coffee shop intellectuals.

Then the winds of fashion stopped flowing in his direction. He knew no other art, so he started trading cheap, ersatz goods from the wholesale market. The wall looks contaminated, and robbed of the ethnic purity it once boasted of. But he needs money at the end of day to keep the kitchen fires burning.

“I bought this online from Label Life. See the comfort in ethnic styles…” he sees a girl flaunting her designer ethnic footwear with high heels. It looks like one of his creations was padded and polished to be sold off as a designer item.

There is a difference between an artist and businessperson.

P.S. Kolhapur is a place in Western India, which boasts of the traditional art of making a certain type of footwear (called chappals in local parlance).
