Suspect

“We were all picnicking together, and moments later, he had pushed her in the sea to drown. He was well aware that Amy cannot swim…. ” the lady being interrogated by the police was visibly shaken.

“What do you think could be the motive? Did you try to help?”

“The blueness of blue, hardness of concrete and steadfastness of trees all mystify me. A change of state can be induced with intervention. I don’t know.” She was turning philosophical.

“You are being taken in. We know that you can swim.”

  1. In the UK, an answer like that would be grounds for suspecting that the witness might be vulnerable. The police could arrest her, but during questioning they would need to arrange a competent person to ensure that any evidence she gave was not tainted by police pressure – and that’s in addition to the solicitor to whom she is entitled. If they didn’t do that the evidence could be ruled inadmissible.
Which isn’t at all what your story is about – sorry!
I guess you’re story is implying that philosophy is not very useful in practical situations…

    1. I guess your first assumption is close enough, that she may have lost her mental balance with what she saw. But whose intervention to change the state? She could have influenced the couple’s relationship in some way.

  2. The police seem to believe she is lying, that she did the deed herself. Strange, her waxing philosophical instead of defending herself, makes me wonder if she’s “all there.”

I think maybe a capital letter is needed after the first quote?
