Proof

It was a break-in. I turned the house upside down. The outdated musical equipment lying in the basement held no interest for me. The papers with hand-written musical notes did.

This place belonged to an award-winning musician. I had found the required proof to sue him. The music was stolen. I am the original composer, wandering in self-imposed oblivion for the last few years.

  1. Hard to prove and breaking in probably wouldn’t help the protagonist’s case. However, original sheet music written by a prominent composer should be worth a lot of money in its own right though I do get the unfairness of somebody stealing another’s work. An original and imaginative take, Reena.

  2. Fun Fact: The music to the Beatles song “Yesterday” literally came to Paul McCartney in a dream. As soon as he woke up, he ran to a piano to play it so he wouldn’t forget. Then he assumed that he had heard the piece someplace else, but didn’t recall it consciously. For weeks, he played it for all of his musician friends to see if it was theirs. When no one claimed it, he and Lennon wrote the lyrics and it was recorded in 1965 on their album “Help.”
