1980 BC

Jeff stood on top of the barge, bidding a silent goodbye to the city. Venice would soon forget this cruise passenger, who wanted to leave a mark on someone’s heart, but failed. She had failed to turn up.

Meanwhile, another petite figure walked across on the Grand Canal Bridge, from Venice train station to Piazzale Roma parking lot, with a suitcase. She was perhaps too late. The gynaecologist had taken her own sweet time to confirm the pregnancy. She had undertaken a long journey to let Jeff know about his impending fatherhood.

It was 1980 BC, the era before cell-phones.

  1. It’s interesting. I lived over forty years without a cellphone and yet I’d almost forgotten how fraught it was if you were delayed for a meeting and couldn’t call to say so! Thanks for reminding me of that, with your entertaining story.
And, like Ali, I choose to believe they will meet in time. And marry and live happily ever after.

  2. Sorry Reena, you lost me on the reference to 1980 BC because we call them mobiles here in Australia, and I was thinking about BC as in ancient history so I saw it as a bit of time travel story. I’m not quite sure how you could cover this base and retain the wit. On the other hand, p[erhaps it’s just me who didn’t connect the dots.
Otherwise, it made for [6+a1 good story.
    Best wishes,

    1. Thanks for making the effort, Rowena! Yes, those contraptions we cannot live without are called mobile phones, cellphones or hand held devices. It is just that cellphones clicked with BC 🙂
