Veiled impact

Liz was my nanny. She was also the mother I wished to have.

She ensured that I did not hear the arguments between my parents. She honed my multifarious talents, by encouraging me to try new activities.

Years later, I learnt that Liz was herself the victim of domestic violence. But she never let us know. The beauty of her character shone through those almond-shaped, brown, affectionate eyes.

When I grew up and learnt to fly independently in the world, I realized what a huge impact she had on me… despite being just the thin veil between me and unhappiness.

  1. Reena, this was beautifully told with a kind of documentary feel about it. It’s interesting and sometimes quite devastating when we find out what we didn’t know as children. I found out my best friend from childhood was a victim of incest by her father. I was really close to the family and it came as a huge shock. UNfortunately, my friend has suffered much because of this.
    Best wishes,
    Rowena
