Let bygones be bygones ….

There were several family secrets hidden in the basement. Each item of junk stored in drawers and cupboards had a story behind it, as his mother often said.

He remembered her say that a clock stopped functioning at the time of each death in the family. So, the time on each clock chronicled the death of one member …. he idly looked for some calendars around, but soon gave up. There were some paintings and embroideries, and unused threads. He wished his mother had created some more stories with those threads, which helped to complete the picture… stories which were not a puzzle to be decoded.

Why would anyone want to keep butterflies with a bell, however pretty they used to be in their lifetime? This was an Aha moment ……

What would he gain by rewriting the stories? He will never be able to catch the exact spirit of what they did and why. What drove them to commit the sins they did, and leave the house haunted forever? He did not want his psyche to be scarred by unpalatable facts, if he found any.

He walked out with determined steps. The house had to be put on sale.
