It is only a measure. There should be a parameter, and it should move. The extent and direction of movement determines the quantum of growth, and the consequences determine the desirability.
The elastic band propels or expels in directions unknown
Recklessness, misery, unhappiness, illness all grow to expedite the end of an existence. Growth needs to be within an acceptable or tolerable range, or the object bursts.
The applied pressure and available space move the pointer
Desired growth or progress happen only with controlled movement. Unlimited freedom is a myth.
