Shopping on credit

My six-year old nephew looked pretty upset on the last visit to my brother’s house.

“What’s up, Charlie?”

“I need to talk to you. Come to my room.” He walked away in a huff.

I looked askance at my brother, who was grinning from ear to ear.

“Let me answer. He wanted to buy a red dress for you in the mall, but that was not your size.”

“Hmmm” …. My brother never spared a chance to poke fun at my plus size.

“I offered to buy something else that you could use – like a perfume, wristwatch or handbag. But Charlie took offence at the refusal. He has now vowed to buy you that dress, when he grows up and starts earning.”

I couldn’t suppress a smile either.

Later, in the privacy of his room, Charlie came up with an interesting proposal.

“Nancy, buy that dress and wear it to my birthday party next week. I will repay the amount with interest, when I start earning.”

“Well, you have at least fifteen years to go, and the accumulated interest will be astronomical.”

“Then, waive the interest, if you love me. We need to show Dad that he cannot always overrule my choice. I have my preference for shopping and friends. And Nancy, you are my bestest friend ……”
