A lesson for a lifetime

Fireman Patrick had just responded to the call of duty.

Unusual sounds from a window attracted his attention. A puppy was dragging a baby wrapped up in a sleeping bag, and howling. The wooden staircase at the other end had fallen victim to the raging fire, and the puppy was now moving towards the window.

Soon, the fire around the window was doused, and expert hands held the baby, while climbing down the ladder outside. Another fireman picked up the dog, and he now whined with pain. The dog had suffered burn wounds.

Patrick saw the mother hold the baby tightly to her bosom, as she shed tears of joy. The dog sighed, as if his job was done, on seeing the baby in safe hands. Then, he heard the sound of a car engine starting. The father had not checked the baby, but was taking the puppy to the vet. Another precious life had to be saved.

Patrick had learnt his lesson for a lifetime. Learning all the technicalities of action, and being awarded for efficiency and presence of mind was not enough. The profession needed an emotional connect with those who suffer. Only that would see him through.
