A Strange Warmth

The old bookshop was closing down. Odorless devices had replaced the familiar, much-loved smell of books. Sydney had bought these as a gift for Will Hobbs. Theirs was an all-of-a-kind family uptown, where hearts were strangely warmed by books, a few degrees towards the far north. (280 characters)

Genetics

The man he had hated for more than a decade was facing him, asking to meet his ex-wife. He controlled his rage with some effort. His nerves threatened to burst with pain. “Why do you wish to meet her?” “She is my sister.” “She never had a brother.” “She is ashamed to talk about me. … Continue reading Genetics

Nirvana

The guy in the next room looked like an ascetic, with his minimal style. The girl at the reception told me he stays there for the full season, and will be a better guide than the ones we hired. It was an expensive resort,  and I wondered how this saintly guy could afford the rent … Continue reading Nirvana

Changing Colors

I picked up a cheap perfume from the counter, and was floating on a cloud after using it. My conservative husband found it too strong for his staid sensibilities. “Why do you need to use this? You own better stuff.” “Sure. But this makes me feel young again. I could afford only this brand at … Continue reading Changing Colors

Reena’s Exploration Challenge #Week 15

Welcome to Week 15! I am about to embark on a wellness coaching program for cancer patients, and attended an introductory training program. They have research-backed data that the root cause for all kinds of cancer is some kind of repression – due to a fear, social conditioning or upbringing. We are told that only … Continue reading Reena’s Exploration Challenge #Week 15

The three year old was etching designs on the wall, after the dust storm. He saw the younger one displaying his art on the car. Mike watched them in silence. His wife was looking around for the cleaning tools. “Visibility is low. But we need to clean up.” “Let it remain for some time.” “But … Continue reading Value-Add

Breakdown

It had been a long distance marriage for three years now. The distance between Jaipur and Delhi was covered by car on the weekends. Kriti would often stop for a coffee en-route at this eating joint. If it was getting late, she freshened up and got dinner for two packed from the same place. The … Continue reading Breakdown

Beginnings of …..

Seventeen top level managers were asked to quit. They were given personality assessment tests, and declared unfit for their positions. Few cases of implied fraud were raked up, and action followed. ‘Zero Tolerance’ was the new buzzword. ‘What is Integrity?’ became the new icebreaker game in conferences. It could hardly have been a bloodier beginning. … Continue reading Beginnings of …..

Business Sense

The handsome horse with a red mane and hoofs was surprisingly unpopular. Business was low, thanks to the message displayed, “Ride with us, and we take you to places you have never been before, across the skies.” The owner happened to be a fiction-writer, with no head for business. Grasshopper’s Flight

Akash was a dream my conservative parents had nurtured for 25 years. He was the kind of son-in-law they loved to flaunt in their social circle – brilliant, wealthy, handsome and yet, so grounded in reality. They had invested considerably in his premiere education. My sister fondly called him Grasshopper. He landed a lucrative assignment … Continue reading Grasshopper’s Flight
