the whimper of the last firecracker
cuts through sleepy windows
as tired revellers go to bed
A hazy smog challenges vision
what’s coming next
-appreciation for hospitality
insufficient to last a season
or credit card debt?
I check the heating
tear off dry-cleaning labels
from last year’s laundry
-The wedding season starts
I need a warm wardrobe ready
to look my best
with well-moisturised skin
and a colourful pout
the trees in the backyard
shed attire
to reveal the bare truth
cold winds declare
political ovens
can only bake lies
an unseasonal shower
can tear away
all layers of protection

I like how you jump from
“I need a warm wardrobe ready
to look my best
with well-moisturised skin
and a colourful pout”
to
“the trees in the backyard
shed attire
to reveal the bare truth”

A perfect micro season name for this time of year, Reena Saxena, when we not only have Diwali and Bonfire night firework smoke but, out here in the UK countryside, chimneys are also starting to smoke. I love the phrase ‘whimper of the last firecracker’, the reminder that we need a warm wardrobe, and the image of the trees in the backyard revealing the bare truth.

This sounds a lot like our new year after the fireworks (and christmas) when we maxed out the credit cards.

True. Diwali is our annual splurging event here. We worship the Goddess of Wealth, but instead of protecting wealth, build leakages for it.
