This is a hackneyed story plot for a thriller, and the author decides to ditch the familiar today.
The protagonist follows her to see what she is up to after seeing him.
He is ever grateful to that momentary thought. He discovered a co-conspirator and a partner for crime and life. They rule the underworld with gloved hands today.
The author then builds a character sketch of a vagabond who busts the racket with the help of a dashing female police officer.
The story goes on.

Thanks, Fandango! TV shows and OTT series thrive and survive on building new characters and plot twists. A character as depicted at the beginning of a series is unrecognisable in a few months.
