Shed fears like you shed clothes.
I’m compelled to be a shark
to protect myself from a whale
and nibble on baby crocodiles
They swallow smaller fish;
Their bellies are not
where I want to be
We sail in the same boat
of self-defence
Shed fears like you shed clothes.
I’m compelled to be a shark
to protect myself from a whale
and nibble on baby crocodiles
They swallow smaller fish;
Their bellies are not
where I want to be
We sail in the same boat
of self-defence
You captured the stress of human fear well. Great poem, Reena!

Great analogy of fear, so universal, yet so different for each of us. I tried very hard not to smirk at nibbling at baby alligators.

I gathered that whales can eat alligators only when they are young, and shoals of small fish. There is always a predator somewhere and vulnerable victims.

Reena, I really like the line “Their bellies are not / where I want to be”—it feels both vulnerable and defiant. The whole poem seems to navigate that blurry space between fear and survival instinct in such a sharp, honest way.
