Burning Haibun

I hear the whispers from a moonlit terrace party but cannot fathom what they are discussing. Young and old all dance the night out to welcome the New Year.

I change the calendar but do not foresee changed schedules and a hidden agenda. They have imposed new rules, but everyone is silent about the lurking danger of retrenchment. A hushed silence prevails as they lie in wait for the following email.

Rising costs are a concern, and venomous investor pressure is mounting in backyards.  Frostbites might be different this year.

  1. Reena, this line really got me:

Frostbites might be different this year.

This makes me think of residents experiencing frostbite from homelessness instead looking out at it from warm safety. So many changes going on in the world. I just heard about the plan to weaponize the US Justice system with the new administration and that scares the hell out of me. Makes me think of The Spanish Inquisition…

  2. Nicely done, Reena, especially the use of sound in the first paragraph, with the ‘whispers from a moonlit terrace party’, and the ‘hushed silence in the second. But those ‘venomous backyards’ stood out for me.

        1. Ok. I was not aware of the movie.

I’m reading Orbital by Samantha Harvey, and there is a reference to spacewalks when they go out fully strapped to click photos. I just wondered what would happen to an animal just dropped out.
