I hear the whispers from a moonlit terrace party but cannot fathom what they are discussing. Young and old all dance the night out to welcome the New Year.
I change the calendar but do not foresee changed schedules and a hidden agenda. They have imposed new rules, but everyone is silent about the lurking danger of retrenchment. A hushed silence prevails as they lie in wait for the following email.
Rising costs are a concern, and venomous investor pressure is mounting in backyards. Frostbites might be different this year.
moonlit whispers dance
hidden dangers lie in wait
venomous backyards

Brilliantly powerful burning haibun, Reena!

I like the blissful ignorance against the underlying power plays.

No wonder ignorance is called blissful. Some people choose that route for peace and some for the benefits they milk by turning a blind eye.

Reena, this line really got me:
Frostbites might be different this year.
This makes me think of residents experiencing frostbite from homelessness instead looking out at it from warm safety. So many changes going on in the world. I just heard about the plan to weaponize the US Justice system with the new administration and that scares the hell out of me. Makes me think of The Spanish Inquisition…

Power cannot be acquired by peaceful means any more. Gone are the days of Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi.

😦 I hope you’re wrong. Darkness is waiting for acceptance of that belief.

There is always new venom invented to mark a new year.

Yes. Change is not always positive.

Nicely done, Reena, especially the use of sound in the first paragraph, with the ‘whispers from a moonlit terrace party’, and the ‘hushed silence in the second. But those ‘venomous backyards’ stood out for me.

Those were the first words that came to mind, and everything else was built around it.

Snakes in the backyard! Ever seen Snakes on a Plane? I digress, your haibun is impactful, and foreboding, as Di mentioned.

What made you think of a plane?

It’s a movie! Reading through, I thought “snakes in the backyard”, and it of course brought to mind the title. Snakes in the backyard is equally as dubious.

Ok. I was not aware of the movie.
I’m reading Orbital by Samantha Harvey, and there is a reference to spacewalks when they go out fully strapped to click photos. I just wondered what would happen to an animal just dropped out.

I looked up the book. It looks like a good one. Do you like it?
