Dreadful Depths

a sunk ship
bodies netted out
-silent
-as much as
we are traumatised
by tsunamis
or failed voyages

I wish they could speak.
tell us about
the splendour or horror
of deep worlds
distrusted
for unfamiliarity

the smug sailor
who conquers waves
weeps in silence
or is intrigued
by unfamiliar objects
or living beings
creeping up
to disturb life

I ask submarines
to not just dive
but develop a language
to help us understand
each other
-those feared depths
and our shallowness

  1. A powerful poem, Reena, that made me think of migrant boats. I like the alliterative phrase ‘traumatised by tsunamis’, and the lines:

    ‘I ask submarines
    to not just dive
    but develop a language
    to help us understand
    each other’.
