If I had to choose one figure of speech to be used repeatedly, it would be the Metaphor.
It is quite a simple figure of speech – describing one thing in terms of another.
It hides an enormous number of layers. Human thought processes are primarily symbolic. One can gauge a person’s mindset by ‘listening to and feeling’ the metaphors s/he uses. Expert coaches can bring about a shift by changing the metaphor.
It is an excellent writing device because it enables people to understand, reason and explain abstract concepts. The human mind remembers images, which may be created by words, constructed in imagination, or snapshots of real life.
The one valuable thing I learned in a writers’ group is to define the narrator before you start. I’ve been bungling on this for quite a long time.
The next step is to decide on a series of mental images to be created in the reader’s mind and find appropriate figures of speech.
There is a long way to go to reach a state of quasi-perfection. (I guess this describes my state of mind)

You are so right, Reena!

I guess all creative writers use it somewhere, without even thinking of the word “Metaphor”

I need to meticulously follow those myself 😊 I tend to be spontaneous – write and post.

The point about the voice of the writer is important for me as I often get confused with it.

The Metaphor is magical as it allows you to look at one thing and see something else. It carries the deepest and most thought-provoking meaning out of any of the parts of speech.

“Look at one thing and seeing something else” is an apt description for metaphor. Thank you so much, Jim!
