Clothes of Piety

temples have transparent walls here
gods are out on a walkabout
asking to be excused
as they cannot identify themselves
in eye mirrors of a species
supposedly their creation

What are you looking for?
They ask mockingly
“Just what I see”, I reply
Gods bereft of pretence
an honest spiritual dance
identity is not a crisis
when you choose to be
over being seen

My pilgrimage is complete.
I am now
what I wanted my gods to be
and not the other way round
I savour the authentic
discard clothes of piety

  1. The title, image and the poem, so brilliant, so insightful, awesome, Reena. When will we get ‘Gods bereft of pretence’?

‘I’m seeing leaders sink in a deeper abyss of pettiness, as the election battle thickens.’ So true.

  2. Brilliant line “gods are out on a walkabout”. Identity crises prevails in leaders and devotion to self more important than what is needed for a peaceful existence. Behave toward others as you would like to have them behave toward you. The depth in your poem is awesome. Brava!
