Crossroads

She peeked back over her shoulder
to check that the coast was clear
for happiness to float in her life
like a gentle breeze, not a storm
like a cosy home, not a shared dorm
where freedom is eternal
compliance not the norm

She peeked back over her shoulder
to leave without regrets
to say a final goodbye
to all she once believed was fine
till it started cracking up her spine
till it asphyxiated individuality
till it threatened to spill out of mines

She looks ahead to find a path
where night gives way to hazy dawn
where a dark past meets uncertain future
it does not kill, it does not matter
life not handed over on a platter
when she starts at the lowest point
life can get only good and better
