There’s plenty to forage
here, from marshland
to field to forest, the last
pawpaws, the autumn olive
at its scarlet peak, and now
the frost-touched ripe
persimmon, sweet
as honey, and still
it’s the weird, even alien-
looking plant that lures
with seeds like sunrise,
food for animals but
forbidden to me.
