It came from somewhere too far to walk, from as far away as the most unreasonable desire, the most devastating hope. It was a call of desperation pleading for help. Dozens heard Amelia Earhart’s final, chilling pleas for help, as she ended up marooned on a desert island. It is thought that Earhart and Fred Noonan who served as her navigator likely took refuge on Gardner Island, now Nikumaroro, a then-uninhabited small island located 2,600 miles off the cost of New Zealand. Amelia Earhart waded into the Pacific Ocean and climbed into her downed and disabled Lockheed Electra 10E. She started the engine, turned on the two-way radio and sent out a plea for help, one more desperate than previous messages. The high tide kept getting higher, and soon it would suck the plane into deeper water, cutting Earhart off from civilization and any chance of rescue.
