“I don’t want that empty space in the shelf to become a negative space, to take away something from the future.”
“I guess we’ll put some games and toys there.” The librarian thinks aloud.
“No. It needs to be a value-add, not a filler.”
“What do you have in mind?”
“Books on financial literacy. Let the kids move from fairy tales and miracles, and learn how to build a life, block-by-block with life skills.”
“But why only financial literacy?”
“Add emotional intelligence”, the author of children’s books smiled, “They won’t get very far without these two companions.”

Reminds me of – “The glass is half-empty. No, the glass is half-full. But in reality, the glass can be filled.”

Reena, I agree, there is no reason why books can’t serve dual functions in empowering ways. So many children’s books have an acculturation aspect to them already.

Thank you, Lisa! The same characters children adore can deliver different lessons.

They are certainly important topics for kids, too. But would they go and seek them out?

Yes, if they are convinced about the results.

Two essential skills for adult life. I like your idea that the gaps must be used to ‘value-add’ rather than just filled.

This seems to captures how two people can see reality so differently. Nicely done, Reena.

Useful books to have, amazing how many people don’t make that step from childhood reading to the next step.
