She hailed America as a perfect capitalist society. There was a Russian backdrop for contrastive effect.
I’m impressed by the way she described failing organisations decades ago. I see it happening around me all the time.
Her concept of second-handers helped me make sense of irrationality around me.
Did she foresee that no society is perfect, because there are deviants who stand to gain from imperfections?
Ayn Rand, you gave me clarity of vision….. yet, I also feel betrayed that Atlantis does not exist in real life.
Is this what sceptics and cynics are made of? Both you and me?

I remember reading Ayn Rand… unsettling even in the 80’s. Like Orwell, she was blessed to be able to right so well, and so up to date…even before the date. Great Story this week. Have a safe one!

Thanks a million! Somehow we tend to remember the unsettling stuff more than bedtime stories. Orwell has been surpassed by the internet.

Sometimes cynicism is all that’s left. Interesting story, Reena. Maybe I’ll read Ayn Rand after all eventually. What I’ve read about her so far doesn’t appeal to me.

It’s difficult to agree with everything. But the characterisation is excellent.

Thank you for introducing me to Ayn Rand. She sounds an interesting woman, although I suspect I would disagree vehemently with her philosophical point of view!

Interesting to know about disagreement at first sight 🙂

Well, yes, I understand your point!
According to Wikipedia, Ayn Rand rejected faith and religion; supported rational and ethical egoism; rejected altruism; and participated in American anti-communist activism (which led on to McCarthyism). All those aspects of Ayn Rand are the antithesis of my own passionately held beliefs. That’s why I say I suspect I would disagree with her!

No society is perfect, and you’ve underlined that fact perfectly.

Dear Reena,
Tough not to be cynical in this day and age, isn’t it?

Perhaps perfect capitalist society is an oxymoron

I agree. Thanks, Neil! I read her books several times to understand if something like this exists.
