Barriers

When I saw it, I couldn’t believe my eyes.  It was all true. I had returned from Ahmedabad, after completing my premium IIT-IIM education, with a plum job offer in hand.

This is the same garden, where Ritu and I had played our childhood games. It was unofficially official between the families that we would be married after I started working. For some strange reason, she had stopped communicating about a year ago. Mails, messages and phone calls went unanswered. I wanted to sort it out in person, and hence, did not involve the families.

I learnt today that a quarrel between the two families had led to this boundary being drawn between the gardens. Ritu had committed suicide without leaving a note. Nobody had cared to inform me.

I see Ritu’s fingers clasped around the rope, and her invisible spirit on the other side trying to reach me.

“There are no barriers between souls,” I say to her silently.
