“They have been rolling out beliefs and superstitions as Culture, and people are expected to fall in line, lest they incur the wrath of the powerful.”
“Is there a difference? Combined beliefs do constitute culture.”
“What I don’t like about it, is the expectation to conform. My belief is that I can think and analyse.”
“But you do need the government to provide a structure to the world you live in.”
“Yes, I do expect a structure in the physical world, but not to be imposed on my thinking space.”
“Remember this quote by HL Mencken
The most dangerous man, to any government, is the man who is able to think things out for himself, without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost invariably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane and intolerable, and so, if he is romantic, he tries to change it. And if he is not romantic personally, he is apt to spread discontent among those who are.”
“Never heard of him. Maybe his existence became inconvenient to others. But he gives me something to think about. And this is a welcome intervention.”
“Your belief? But the majority wins.”

I’ve enjoyed reading your contributions to tale weavers — they are thought provoking, entertaining, and evocative.
The quote is so true to the world we live in now — just as it was when Mencken was writing in the 30s and 40s.
Structure, now, seems to go beyond the government’s imposition of rules of order. The thought police prowl, and dissent is both encouraged and forbidden.
