The news headlines are depressing, and I imagine a world with synthetic food capsules.
India, after gaining independence in 1947, remained a predominantly agrarian economy for 20 years. In 1965, Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri gave a national slogan of “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’ (Hail the Soldier, Hail the Farmer). It acknowledged that border security and agriculture were prime contributors to the country’s existence. Industry and Services gained predominance much later.
Yet, in 2017, management of water resources remains a prime issue, and farmers continue to depend on rains. The youth have migrated to urban areas in search of work, increasing the rate of unemployment.
The reign of rains
on the farmer’s income
reins their capacity
to manage and overcome.
Poverty paralyzes the hand
that feeds the nation.
Superficial prosperity
stunts imagination.
